So, as most of my followers probably know, I went to Chicago Comic Con today and met Matt Smith.
What you probably don’t know, however, is that a couple of months ago I handmade an 11th Doctor Sock Monkey to give to him today. And by handmade I mean all of it- from actual socks, and I made the jacket and the fez and everything. I had almost no sewing experience beforehand so it was a long and frustrating process trying to make it look right.
I also made a shoebox into a TARDIS to put it in, with scrapbooking paper, tissue paper and Mod Podge.
I was really nervous about his reaction- I wasn’t expecting much, but I hoped he would at least like it. I just figured he’d be like, “cool, thanks!” and move on to the next person in line.
But no. That’s not what happened.
He saw the box, and his eyes got all wide and he was like, “Is this a gift?” and I said yes.
So he opened it, saw the monkey, and said something along the lines of, “This is so fucking cool!”
Then he immediately slapped his hand over his mouth and apologized for dropping an F-bomb and laughed. He asked me a couple times if I was sure I wanted him to keep it, “Is this really for me?!”, etc,
and after being assured that yes, indeed, I 100% wanted him to keep it, he starts playing with it. Putting it on his shoulders, making it dance, covering his eyes with its paws, etc.
As if that wasn’t enough to make my day, he gets serious and says, “I wish I had something to give you!”
I was like, “Matt, seriously, you’ve given me so much in so many ways. You don’t owe me anything.” I know it’s cheesy but I totally meant it. This man has brought so much joy into my life just by existing.
But he’s insisting that he does something for me in return, so he says, “Here. I’ll keep the monkey, and I’ll sign the box and you keep it. That way we both have part of it to remember each other by.”
Mind you, I’d only paid to have an 8x10 photo signed, which he’d already done, so I was like, “oh, no, that’s okay! Really, you don’t have to.” But he insisted.
I almost started crying right then and there, but I didn’t. I held myself together and thanked him profusely.
[In case you can’t read it- the inside lid of the box (second to last in the photoset) says, “Thanks! -Matt Smith, The Doctor”
The front of it has a cute little face doodle and says “Thanks you soo much!” And in case you’re wondering, the lighting is really bad- the TARDIS is actually different shades of blue, not purple and green]
I always have a little bit of apprehension when I meet celebrities, whether they’re band members or actors or whatever. There’s always the possibility that they won’t live up to the idea that you’ve built up in your head of them, that they won’t be as nice or as cool as you perceive them to be.
I’m really, really happy to say that Matt not only lived up to my expectations, he exceeded them by far. He was so kind, so humble, so patient and so giving. He always has and always will be “my Doctor,” but now I can say he is hands-down the nicest celebrity I’ve ever met.
Thanks for everything, Matt.
